Schaeffler has developed an inductive angular measuring system that is integrated in the bearing and matched to the requirements of directly driven, highly-dynamic and precise rotary axes in machine tools. The principle of integrating the SRM measuring system into a rotary table bearing, which was successfully implemented in the series YRTM, has now been consistently further developed. The SRM measuring system combines a high measuring speed and measurement accuracy with a reduced design envelope and robustness. The system is insensitive to contamination, offers a rotary axis with an open center and makes a convincing case due to reduced alignment work. It is a convincing alternative to fitted optical angular measuring systems. Bearings of the new INA series YRTSMA are available in the bore diameter range 200 mm to 460 mm. They correspond in mechanical terms to the high-rigidity, high-speed bearing series YRTS. High measurement accuracy The new INA series YRTSMA comprises an absolute measuring system. Information about the absolute angle is available immediately after switching on the machine, in contrast to an incremental measuring system, in which the absolute position is not found until a reference run is carried out after switching on the machine. Knowledge of the absolute position is always required if there is a risk of collision e.g. between the tool and the work piece (collision of projecting edges) during the reference run. This system is typically used in milling head applications. The dimensional scale of the new series YRTSMA is located directly on the inner ring. A second measuring head is not required due to the excellent radial runout of the dimensional scale, which is manufactured in high-precision bearing quality. The design envelope is significantly reduced by using only one measuring head without incurring restrictions in performance. This solution is even less sensitive to rolling bearing grease and normal contamination on the rotary table due to the inductive principle, which is comparable with a transformer. The free space in the center of the axis can still be used for other machine components. The electronic evaluation system has been integrated into the measuring head so that the system can be directly connected to the control system. The measuring head is effectively sealed off from the adjacent construction and is designed to be screw mounted to the bearing so that it always has the correct distance to the dimensional scale without requiring adjustment. The measuring head is easily accessible from outside and can be replaced without additional setup if required. With the INA series YRTSMA, Schaeffler is offering absolute angular measuring systems with an open bearing center for high-precision rotary tables in machine tools. The integration of the system directly into the rotary table bearing provides economic benefits and a very high level of accuracy without the requirement for additional components and alignment work.
